From the President
Dear Colleague: Welcome back for another school year. I hope that you had a restful and relaxing summer, and that you return to the classroom with many new ideas and a fresh perspective. This has been an exciting year for PMEA. As many of you know, one of District 3’s own, Fran Nesta from Keystone High School, has assumed the presidency of the state organization. Fran brings his wit and wisdom to the office, and many new ideas that will move PMEA into the next decade. As I move forward in assuming the presidency of our district, I would be remiss if I did not recognize the hard work and diligence of our new immediate past president, Dr. Jason Worzbyt from IUP. Jason is a wonderful communicator, not only serving the office of president well, but also in his interaction with the students, both as an officer and as a guest conductor of the highest quality. While I know he looks forward to returning full time to academia and his family, I know he will be a strong presence in the ranks of District 3 for many years to come. As we move forward with this academic year, we also move forward in the strategic planning that will guide the mission our organization for the next five years and beyond. This process at the state level has provided the members of the executive board an opportunity to take a hard look at how PMEA is currently run, and how to better serve our members in the future. We are now asking for you to take an active role in the process. A copy of the PMEA strategic plan is on display on the newly designed state website (www.pmea.net). I encourage you to read through this document and provide input to the authors and to your district officers. The final document will be approved in January. I am excited to be a part of the District 3 Executive committee. District 3 covers a diverse area of Pennsylvania, with each school district presenting its own variety of rewards and challenges. However, our primary goal is clear: to deliver a high quality of music education to our students, and provide meaningful professional development activities for our members. I encourage you to take advantage of all that PMEA has to offer. Best wishes for a productive and memorable school year! Yours in music, Steven W. Luxbacher District 3 President
